- After living overseas most of his childhood, Commander (Ret.) Craig Lepkowski began his law enforcement career at the Lake Forest (IL) Police Department in 1992. Throughout his 29-year career, he has served as a patrol officer, youth officer, detective, sergeant, and commander. Early in his career, he enjoyed five years on a multi-jurisdictional SWAT team (NIPAS EST) that served about 40 different jurisdictions. Craig also filled the role of Administrative Commander, Internship Coordinator, and LFPD Public Information Officer for several years, and performed as a public speaker on a variety of topics.
- Craig currently serves as an adjunct professor at the College of DuPage and North East Multi-Regional Training (NEMRT) in public safety cycling, report writing, and other public safety courses and seminars.
- Craig is a certified International Police Mountain Bike Association Public Safety Cyclist Instructor and Bicycle Response Team Instructor and served on the organization’s board for nine years, the last two as president. He has instructed over 30 courses and hundreds of attendees, consulted for dozens of public safety agencies, and drafted numerous policy and procedure documents.
- His Spanish literacy has also allowed Craig to act as a translator for Argentinian conference attendees, present to the government of Lima, Peru on the benefits of public safety cycling (https://ipmba.org/blog/comments/ipmba-joins-the-us-state-departments-speaker-and-specialist-program), and instruct an advanced bike patrol unit in Belo Horizonte, Brazil (https://ipmba.org/blog/comments/associacaeo-internacional-de-bicicletas-de-montanha-da-policia-em-belo-hori).
- Craig has a bachelor’s degree in Spanish/English from Lake Forest College (LFC), and a master’s degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Loyola University Chicago (LUC). He also graduated from the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety School of Staff and Command.
- Publications include his LFC Senior Thesis, Métodos de enseñanza para idiomas extranjeros on teaching methodologies for foreign languages; LUC Final paper, Racial Profiling by Patrol Officers: Problems with Perception, Practice, and Prejudice; and numerous articles for the IPMBA News:
